The best hotel credit cards for most US travelers are the $95 World of Hyatt Credit Card, $95 Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and $99 IHG One Rewards Premier, since each includes an annual free night that can be worth more than the fee. With no favorite chain, a flexible card like Chase Sapphire Preferred fits better. Fees, earning rates and offers below were checked on issuer websites in September 2026. Welcome offers change often, so confirm them before you apply.
Which hotel credit cards are worth it?
A hotel credit card is worth it when you stay with one chain at least once a year and will actually use the annual free night. Hotel cards are not built to be your everyday spending card; their value comes from the certificate, automatic elite status and a high earning rate at the chain's own hotels. These three mid-priced cards, all issued by Chase, deliver that for under $100 a year.
| Card | Annual fee | Annual free night | Automatic status | Earning at the chain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| World of Hyatt Credit Card | $95 | A Category 1 to 4 night after each cardmember anniversary, plus a second after $15,000 in spending in a calendar year | Discoverist, plus 5 tier-qualifying night credits a year and 2 more per $5,000 spent | Up to 9 points per $1 at Hyatt (4 from the card, up to 5 as a member) |
| Marriott Bonvoy Boundless | $95 | One night costing up to 35,000 points each anniversary | Silver Elite, plus 15 Elite Night Credits a year and 1 more per $5,000 spent | 6 points per $1 at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels |
| IHG One Rewards Premier | $99 | One night costing up to 40,000 points each anniversary, and you can add points for a pricier hotel | Platinum Elite | 10 points per $1 at IHG hotels |
World of Hyatt Credit Card
Chase's World of Hyatt Credit Card costs $95 and gives you a free night at any Category 1 to 4 Hyatt hotel or resort every year after your cardmember anniversary. Outside Hyatt, it earns 2 bonus points per $1 at restaurants, on airline tickets, on local transit and commuting, and on fitness club memberships, and 1 point per $1 elsewhere. The welcome offer at the time of writing was up to 60,000 bonus points: 30,000 after $3,000 in purchases in the first three months, and up to 30,000 more by earning 2 points per $1 on up to $15,000 in purchases in the first six months. Choose it if you stay at Hyatt properties and want the certificate that is simplest to value, since it is tied to a hotel category rather than a points cap.
Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless costs $95. It earns 6 points per $1 at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, 3 points per $1 on the first $6,000 a year in combined grocery, gas and dining purchases, and 2 points per $1 on everything else. Each anniversary brings a Free Night Award for a stay costing up to 35,000 points, and you get Silver Elite status plus 15 Elite Night Credits a year. Spending $35,000 in a year earns Gold status. The welcome offer at the time of writing was three Free Night Awards, each worth up to 50,000 points, after $3,000 in purchases in the first three months. It suits travelers who want the widest choice of hotel brands.
IHG One Rewards Premier
The IHG One Rewards Premier costs $99 and packs in the most extras. It earns 10 points per $1 at IHG hotels, 5 per $1 on travel, dining and gas, and 3 per $1 on other purchases. You get Platinum Elite status, an anniversary night up to 40,000 points, and the fourth night free when you book a four-night stay with points at the same hotel. Spending $20,000 in a calendar year adds a $100 statement credit and 10,000 bonus points, and the card reimburses Global Entry or TSA PreCheck up to $120 every four years. The welcome offer at the time of writing was 140,000 bonus points after $3,000 in the first three months. IHG points are worth less per point than Hyatt points, so compare the earning rates by value rather than by the number; our guide to what a point is worth explains how.
How do you tell if a hotel card's free night covers its fee?
Price the night you would actually book, then compare it with the annual fee. The certificate is only worth what you would otherwise have paid for that room.
Two worked examples, with the assumptions stated:
- Hyatt: you use the certificate at a Category 3 hotel on a night when the cash rate is $200, a stay you would have paid for anyway. Value: $200 - $95 fee = $105 ahead, before counting any points you earn.
- Marriott: the hotel you want costs 32,000 points on your dates, under the 35,000-point cap, and its cash rate is $180. Value: $180 - $95 = $85 ahead.
If you would not have stayed at all without the certificate, value it at what you would normally spend on a night's lodging, not the hotel's posted rate. Marriott and IHG award prices vary by hotel and date, so check what your usual hotels cost in points before you count on the certificate covering them.
How should you choose a hotel credit card?
Start with where you already stay, then check the certificate against those hotels.
- Count your nights by chain. Look at the last two years of hotel stays. If more than half were with one chain, that chain's card is the place to start.
- Check the free night against your hotels. Confirm your usual hotels fall within Hyatt Categories 1 to 4, or cost 35,000 Marriott points or 40,000 IHG points or less on typical dates.
- Decide how much status matters. Discoverist, Silver Elite and Platinum Elite are entry and mid tiers. Read the program's own benefit list to see whether perks such as late checkout apply at your hotels.
- Compare the welcome offer with your normal spending. Only apply if you can reach the minimum spend with purchases you would make anyway.
- Check Chase's application rules. All three cards are Chase cards, and Chase is widely reported to decline applicants who opened five or more cards in the past 24 months. Our Chase 5/24 rule guide explains how to sequence applications.
- Compare against a flexible card. If your stays are spread across chains, the next section is the better fit.
Is a flexible travel card better than a hotel credit card?
For most people who do not stay with one chain, yes, because flexible points can be used across many hotels and airlines instead of one program. These cards from our reviews earn well on hotels; figures are from our product pages.
| Card | Annual fee | Hotel earning | Hotel-related perks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase Sapphire Preferred | $95 | 5x on Chase Travel bookings; 2x other travel | A $100 hotel credit added in the June 2026 refresh; points transfer to airline and hotel programs; no foreign transaction fee |
| Capital One Venture X | $395 | 10x on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel; 2x everything else | Airport lounge access |
| Chase Sapphire Reserve | $795 | 8x on Chase Travel; 4x on hotels booked directly | An annual travel credit and lounge access |
| The Platinum Card from American Express | $895 | 5x on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel | A hotel credit among its statement credits, plus the widest lounge network |
A common setup is to hold both: a hotel card for the free night and status, and a flexible card for everyday spending. If you move Chase points to a hotel program, check the current transfer ratio in your account first, since partners and ratios can change. Our guides to two-card combinations and travel credit cards go further.
Do hotel credit cards give you elite status?
Yes. Each co-branded card here includes status automatically for as long as you hold it: Discoverist with the World of Hyatt card, Silver Elite with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and Platinum Elite with the IHG One Rewards Premier. The Hyatt and Marriott cards also add night credits each year and more for spending, which count toward higher tiers. Status benefits differ by program and hotel, so treat them as a bonus rather than the reason to get the card.
What about Hilton credit cards?
Hilton Honors cards are issued by American Express. We could not confirm their current fees and benefits on the issuer's website when we checked in September 2026, so they are not in our comparison tables. If Hilton is your main chain, review the current terms on the American Express site before comparing them with the cards above.
Who should skip a hotel credit card?
Skip a hotel card if you would not use the free night every year.
- You carry a balance. Interest at typical card rates outweighs a free night quickly. Pay down the balance first.
- You book the cheapest room regardless of brand. A certificate tied to one chain loses value if you rarely stay there.
- You travel less than once a year. An unused certificate turns a $95 fee into a straight cost.
- You want simple rewards. A flat-rate cash back card is easier to value than hotel points.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best hotel credit card for most people?
For most travelers with a favorite chain, one of the $95 to $99 co-branded cards: the World of Hyatt Credit Card, Marriott Bonvoy Boundless or IHG One Rewards Premier. Each includes an annual free night that can be worth more than the fee. If you do not stay with one chain, a flexible card such as Chase Sapphire Preferred is usually the better choice.
Are hotel credit cards worth the annual fee?
They are if you use the free night. The World of Hyatt card's Category 1 to 4 night, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless night up to 35,000 points and the IHG Premier night up to 40,000 points can each cover a $95 to $99 fee in one stay. Price the night you would actually book to check, and skip the card if you would not use it.
Do hotel credit cards give free nights every year?
The three cards compared here do, after each cardmember anniversary, as long as you keep the card open and pay the fee. The World of Hyatt card also offers a second Category 1 to 4 night after $15,000 in spending in a calendar year. Certificates come with caps and expiration dates, so read the terms and plan your stay early.
Is a hotel card or a travel card better for hotel stays?
A hotel card is better if most of your stays are with one chain, because of the free night and status. A flexible travel card is better if your stays are spread across brands. For example, Capital One Venture X earns 10x on hotels booked through Capital One Travel, and Chase Sapphire Preferred points transfer to hotel programs.
Do Chase hotel cards count toward the 5/24 rule?
The World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and IHG One Rewards Premier are all Chase cards, and Chase is widely reported to decline most applicants who opened five or more personal cards in the past 24 months. Chase does not publish the rule, so check your recent applications and plan the order in which you apply.
