What changed in the credit card market in 2025–2026
The last eighteen months brought more change to North American credit cards than any period in the previous decade. The headline shifts, as reported by the issuers and the specialist press:
The premium fee race
Chase relaunched the Sapphire Reserve in June 2025 with a $795 annual fee and a restructured set of credits, and added a Sapphire Reserve for Business. American Express followed in September 2025, raising the Platinum Card and Business Platinum to $895 alongside a larger bundle of statement credits. Citi entered the tier with the Strata Elite at $595, and Robinhood began an invitation-only rollout of a $695 Platinum card in 2026. The practical lesson is the same for every card in this group: the credits only pay off if you would have spent the money anyway, so price them honestly before you apply.
Capital One and Discover
Regulators approved Capital One's acquisition of Discover in May 2025. Discover card accounts are moving onto Capital One's platform in waves; the Discover brand and its cash-back programme have continued. If you hold a Discover card, watch your mail and app for migration notices — your card number or app may change even if the rewards do not.
Apple Card is changing issuer
In January 2026 Chase was announced as the new issuer of Apple Card, replacing Goldman Sachs over a transition expected to take around two years. The card remains on Mastercard. Existing cardholders do not need to reapply; Apple and the issuers will communicate any account changes directly.
Co-brand shake-ups
Several big retail and travel partnerships changed hands. Walmart's card programme moved to OnePay and Synchrony in 2025, replacing the previous Capital One cards. Bilt relaunched its rewards card in 2026 on a new issuer after ending its Wells Fargo partnership. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines merged their loyalty programmes into Atmos Rewards, with new Bank of America cards. In Canada, Hudson's Bay credit cards were converted to Neo Financial cards in 2025 following the retailer's collapse.
Canada
Canadian issuers refreshed several flagship cards: Scotiabank moved its Passport and Momentum Visa Infinite cards onto Visa's Infinite+ tier, Rogers Bank introduced a card on Mastercard's new World Legend tier, and American Express Canada announced changes to Platinum lounge access. Lower interchange fees for small businesses — negotiated with Visa and Mastercard from October 2024 — are expected to put gradual pressure on rewards over time.

Is it worth applying for a brand-new credit card?
New cards often launch with strong welcome offers, but their benefits are untested and can change quickly. Compare the ongoing value — rewards you will actually earn minus the annual fee — rather than the launch bonus alone.
Why did premium credit card fees go up?
Issuers added more statement credits and travel benefits and raised fees to fund them — the Chase Sapphire Reserve to $795 and the Amex Platinum to $895. The cards are only worth it if you use enough of the credits.
What happened to Discover cards after the Capital One merger?
Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover in 2025 and is migrating Discover accounts to its platform in stages. The Discover brand and cash-back rewards have continued; cardholders receive notices before any change to their account.
Who issues the Apple Card now?
Goldman Sachs still services Apple Card during the transition, but Chase was announced in January 2026 as the new issuer. The move is expected to take about two years, and cardholders do not need to reapply.
