Our take on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is the best choice for a household that flies WestJet at least once a year, because the free first checked bag for you and up to eight guests on the same reservation, plus the annual companion voucher, can be worth more than the $139 fee on a single family trip. As of September 2026 RBC lists 2 WestJet points per dollar on WestJet flights and vacations, Sunwing Vacations, groceries, gas, EV charging, transit and rideshare, and 1.5 points on everything else.

The companion voucher is now tied to spending. After the welcome voucher, you get one each year only if you spend at least $5,000 on the card, about $417 a month, a low bar for anyone using it as a main card. The voucher can be taken as a round-trip companion fare starting from $119 plus taxes and fees, a 30% airfare discount, a $200 vacation credit or two lounge passes.

RBC's welcome offer values 70,000 points at up to $700, so we treat a point as worth 1 cent. On that basis, 2 points per dollar is a 2% return on everyday categories, which is competitive before any travel perks. The income requirement is high at $80,000 personal or $150,000 household.

Good fit if

You fly WestJet or book WestJet Vacations at least once a year
You travel with family and check bags, so the free first bag covers the whole booking
You'll spend at least $5,000 a year on the card to earn the annual companion voucher

Skip it if

You fly Air Canada more than WestJet
You won't reach $5,000 a year in card spending, which the annual voucher requires

Worked example

Assume $600 a month on groceries, $200 on gas and transit, $1,500 a year on WestJet flights, and $700 a month on everything else. Groceries, gas and transit total $9,600 a year, earning 19,200 points at 2x; flights earn 3,000 points; other spending of $8,400 earns 12,600 points at 1.5x. That is 34,800 WestJet points, worth $348 at a conservative 1 cent each. After the $139 fee you keep $209, and $19,500 in total spending clears the $5,000 voucher threshold.

How it stacks up

Air Canada flyers should look at the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, which also has a $139 fee and a free first checked bag but earns Aeroplan points at 1.5x on groceries and gas. Porter flyers have the BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard at $199, which makes sense only if Porter serves your home airport well. In practice, the right card is whichever airline flies most often from where you live.

This card was recently refreshed (November 5, 2025). The RBC/WestJet refresh effective Nov 5, 2025 widened the 2x categories and added insurance, but raised the fee to $139 and put the companion voucher behind a spend minimum. The basic WestJet RBC Mastercard was refreshed too.
