Activate your Discover Card online
- Go to discover.com/activate
- Sign in, or enter the card details if you aren't registered
- Enter the 3-digit code after the letter 'A' on the back of the card
- Verify your identity
- Confirm. The card works straight away
Activate in the Discover Mobile app
- Open the Discover app and sign in
- Choose the option to activate the new card
- Enter the code from the back of the card and confirm
Activate by phone
Call 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) (Discover customer service number published on discover.com) and follow the automated prompts. You will usually be asked for the card number and a piece of identity information such as the last four digits of your Social Security number or your ZIP code.
After you activate
- Register for online access so you can track spending and pay the bill
- Add the card to your digital wallet
- Update recurring payments if it's a replacement
If your Discover Bank card won't activate
- Code rejected: use the 3 digits after the 'A', not the CVV next to the signature panel

Can I use my Discover Bank card before activating it?
Generally no. A new card is blocked until it is activated, although some issuers activate a replacement automatically the first time you use it with your PIN, and some let you use a virtual card number in the app straight away.
Does activating a Discover Card affect my credit score?
No. Activation is not a credit check. Any hard inquiry happened when you applied; activating simply switches the card on. Not activating a new account does not close it, so it can still appear on your credit report.
