A new card usually doesn't appear in your app because the account hasn't synced or, for a replacement card, because it still needs activating and linking. Capital One says a brand-new account can take up to 72 hours to appear. If you're missing a PIN, look for a separate letter, then request one online, in the app or by phone. Not every credit card needs a PIN.

Why isn't my new credit card showing in my app?

The most common reasons are timing, activation and linking. Find the situation that matches yours before you call the bank:

SituationWhy it's missingWhat to do
Brand-new accountThe account hasn't reached the app yetWait. Capital One says it can take up to 72 hours.
Replacement cardThe new card isn't activated or linked to the existing accountActivate it, then follow any prompts to link it
New account at a bank you already useThe new account isn't enrolled in online banking yetEnroll or add the account on the website, then sign in again
Store or co-branded cardThe account may be managed by the issuing bank, not the storeUse the app or website named on the card or its welcome letter

How do I get my new card to show up in the app?

  1. Activate the card first, in the app or by calling the number on the back.
  2. If it replaces an old card, follow the app's prompts to link or consolidate it with your existing account. Capital One says replacement cards need to be activated and linked in the app.
  3. If it's a new account, give it time. For Capital One, that's up to 72 hours.
  4. Update the app to the latest version, then sign out and sign back in.
  5. If the account still doesn't appear, sign in on the issuer's website, and enroll or add the new account there. Capital One says a new account must be enrolled in online banking before you can link it.
  6. Still missing after that? Call the number on the back of the card.

Our activation guides show where the activate option sits in each bank's app, including Capital One and Chase. If you lost the sticker, see how to activate a credit card without the sticker.

Do credit cards come with a PIN?

Not always. Chase says most cardholders don't need a PIN for everyday purchases. You typically need one for a cash advance at an ATM, and for some purchases at stores when you travel abroad. For regular shopping in stores and online, you can use the card without one. If your card does have a PIN, Chase says it should arrive in its own piece of mail, separate from the card, so check for a second envelope before you request a new one.

How do I get a PIN for my new credit card?

Request one through your issuer's website, app or phone line. Here's how several major issuers handle it:

IssuerHow to get a PINHow it arrives
ChaseCall 1-800-297-4970Mailed to your address on file, usually within two weeks
Capital OneOnline, choose I Want To, then Get a Cash Advance PIN. Or call the number on the back.A code by email or text lets you choose a PIN right away, or a PIN is mailed in about 7 to 10 business days
Bank of AmericaOnline Banking, the Mobile Banking app, or the number on the backFollow the prompts after you sign in or call
Scotiabank (Canada)In online banking, select the card, then Manage, Account Settings, Account Management and Change card PIN. For a Mastercard, call 1-888-566-5609. Or visit a branch or ABM.You choose it
BMO (Canada)Reset or change a BMO Mastercard PIN in online or mobile bankingYou choose it
CIBC (Canada)Select or change your PIN in online or mobile bankingYou choose it

Bank of America adds that a PIN for use abroad should be 4 digits, because some foreign ATMs don't accept longer PINs.

Is it different in Canada?

Canadian banks generally let you choose or change a credit card PIN yourself, online, in the app, at a branch or at an ABM (the Canadian term for an ATM). Scotiabank notes that after you change your PIN, you may need to enter it up to three times at checkout or at a non-Scotiabank ABM before it fully activates. See our Scotiabank activation guide for its activation rules, including phone-only activation for its Mastercard.

My card is activated but still gets declined. Why?

Check that the old card isn't the one saved in your digital wallet or on merchant accounts. Capital One recommends updating recurring charges, online accounts and digital wallets with the new card details. For a replacement, Capital One says the old card typically keeps working through the last day of the month shown on its expiration date, and after that transactions will likely be declined. If you haven't activated yet, see how long you have to activate a new card.

Is it safe if someone calls to set up my PIN?

No. Hang up. Chase says real bank representatives won't ask for your password, PIN or account numbers, and Wells Fargo says it won't ask for your PIN or one-time access codes. Set or request a PIN only through the app, a website address you type yourself, or the number on the back of your card. Our guide to card activation scams covers the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my new credit card not showing up in my app?

Usually because the account is brand new and hasn't synced yet, or because a replacement card hasn't been activated and linked. Capital One says a new account can take up to 72 hours to appear. Activate the card, follow any linking prompts, update the app, and call the number on the back if it still doesn't show.

How long does it take for a new credit card to show up in the app?

It depends on the issuer. Capital One says a brand-new account can take up to 72 hours to appear in its app. A replacement card for an existing account should show under that account once you activate and link it. If it's been longer than a few days, call the number on the back of the card.

Do credit cards come with a PIN?

Not always. Chase says most cardholders don't need a PIN for everyday purchases. You typically need one for a cash advance at an ATM and for some purchases abroad. If your card has a PIN, it usually arrives in a separate letter. If you didn't get one, you can request it from your issuer.

I didn't receive a PIN for my new credit card. What should I do?

First check your mail for a separate envelope, since PINs are usually mailed apart from the card. If it hasn't arrived, request one through your issuer's website, app or the number on the back of the card. Capital One can let you choose a PIN right away with a code sent by email or text.

How long does it take to get a credit card PIN by mail?

It varies by issuer. Chase says PINs are usually mailed to the address on file and typically arrive within two weeks. Capital One says a mailed PIN takes about 7 to 10 business days. If you need it sooner, check whether your issuer lets you choose a PIN online or in the app.

Will my bank call me about my PIN?

Treat any call about your PIN as a scam. Chase says its representatives won't ask for your PIN, and Wells Fargo says it won't ask for your PIN or one-time access codes. If someone calls about your PIN, hang up and call the number on the back of your card, or use your bank's official app.
