Visa Gift Card Not Working Online? How to Register and Fix It

A Visa gift card usually fails online because the store checks the billing name, address or ZIP code against the card issuer's records and they don't match. Depending on the issuer, either enter your own name and address (Vanilla says no registration is needed), or register them on the issuer's website, then type them exactly the same way at checkout. A low balance, a foreign merchant or a subscription can also cause a decline.

Why won't my Visa gift card work online?

The most common reason is an address check. Many online stores use an Address Verification System (AVS) to confirm that the billing address you type matches the address on file for the card. A Visa gift card number goes into the same payment field as a credit card number, so the store runs the same check, even though the gift card may not have your address on file.

Other common reasons include:

• The balance doesn't cover the full order, including tax and shipping.
• The store is based outside the United States. Vanilla Visa gift cards only work with merchants based in the US and the District of Columbia.
• The purchase is a subscription or recurring charge, which Vanilla cards can't be used for.
• The store's fraud software declines gift cards. Visa says some internet merchants use fraud protection software that may decline a Visa gift card.

Do I need to register my Visa gift card to use it online?

It depends on who issued the card, so check the name and website printed on the back before you do anything. Here's how three common types compare:

How do I register a Visa gift card for online purchases?

Register on the issuer's own website, using the address printed on your card or its packaging. The steps are similar for most issuers:

1. Find the issuer's website and toll-free number on the back of the card or in the card packaging.
2. Type that website address into your browser yourself. Don't use a search ad, or a link from a text or email.
3. Enter the card number, expiration date and security code when asked.
4. Choose the option to register the card or update your details, and add your name, billing address and phone number.
5. Save the changes, and note exactly how you typed the address, including apartment numbers and abbreviations.
6. At checkout, enter the same name and billing address, plus the card number, expiration date and security code.

Giftcards.com says that if a site won't let you update the information, you may at least be able to see the generic name and address already linked to the card, which you can try at checkout. What ZIP code do I use for a Visa gift card?

Use the ZIP code the issuer has on file for the card. For Vanilla cards, that means your own ZIP code, because Vanilla says you can use it when asked. For registered cards, use the ZIP code you registered. Giftcards.com gives these tips for its cards:

• If the card came to you in the mail, try the ZIP code of your mailing address.
• Online, try the same ZIP code you entered in the shipping address.
• If that doesn't work, try your home ZIP code.

Still declined after registering?

Work through this checklist before you contact the issuer:

• The balance covers the order total, including tax and shipping.
• Your name and address are typed exactly as registered.
• You entered the card security code.
• The store is based in the US, if your card is a Vanilla card.
• The purchase isn't a subscription or recurring charge.
• No pending hold from a gas station or restaurant is using up part of the balance.

If all of that checks out, try a different store. Vanilla says a decline when you have enough funds is most likely caused by security measures, and suggests using the card in person or with a different online merchant. Can I use a Visa gift card for subscriptions or on foreign websites?

Usually not. Vanilla says its Visa gift cards can't be used for recurring billing and only work with merchants based in the United States and the District of Columbia. Visa also advises against using a Visa gift card for recurring bill payments such as a phone or cable bill. Even if a subscription accepts the card at sign-up, later renewals can fail once the balance runs low, so a credit or debit card is the better choice for anything that renews.

Is it different in Canada?

Visa gift cards sold in Canada generally need registering before you shop online. Visa Canada says to register the card by calling the provider or visiting its website, and that the name, address and phone number you use for an online or phone purchase must be exactly the same as the information you registered. How do I register safely?

Only enter your card number on the issuer's official website. Giftcards.com warns about fake sites that copy real gift card sites and capture the card number and PIN as you type them. Type the address printed on the card into your browser, and never give the card number or security code to anyone who calls, texts or emails you offering help.
