About Synchrony

Synchrony is a store-card and co-brand issuer that lends through Synchrony Bank, best known for retail credit cards and promotional financing at major merchants. Its programs include the OnePay CashRewards Card for Walmart shoppers, the PayPal Cashback Mastercard, the Venmo Credit Card, the Amazon Store Card, the Lowe's Advantage Card and the Sam's Club Mastercard.

Synchrony suits you if you shop often with one retailer, want special financing on a large purchase, or have fair credit and want a first card. Many of its cards offer prequalification that gives a decision in seconds with no impact to your credit score. The limitation: store-only cards work only with that brand or its network, and deferred-interest promotions can charge interest back to the purchase date if you do not pay the promotional balance in full in time.

Approval rules and tips

Synchrony does not publish a formal limit on how often you can apply. Approval is based on your credit score, income, existing debt and recent applications — check any pre-qualification tool first, because it uses a soft inquiry.

  • Use the Prequalify option on Synchrony card pages; it gives a decision in seconds with no impact to your credit bureau score.
  • A full application after prequalifying may affect your credit score.
  • Many store cards are aimed at fair to good credit, which makes them easier to get than most bank rewards cards.
  • Read financing terms closely: deferred-interest offers charge interest back to the purchase date if the promotional balance is not paid in full.

How to apply for a Synchrony card

Apply on synchrony.com, on the partner retailer's website or app, or in store at checkout. Many Synchrony cards offer a Prequalify option that returns a decision in seconds with no impact to your credit bureau score, while submitting a full application may affect your score. You will typically need your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, income and a phone number.

How do I activate a new Synchrony card?

See our step-by-step guide to activating a Synchrony store and co-brand credit cards — online, in the app or by phone.

Is Synchrony a bank?

Yes. Synchrony Bank is the bank behind Synchrony's credit cards, and it also offers savings accounts and CDs. When you open a store or co-brand card with a partner such as Lowe's or PayPal, Synchrony Bank is usually the lender, so your statements, payments and credit reporting come from Synchrony.

Can I use a Synchrony store card anywhere?

Only some of them. Store-only cards, such as the Lowe's Advantage Card, work with that retailer or its network. Co-branded cards on the Visa or Mastercard network, such as the PayPal Cashback Mastercard and the Sam's Club Mastercard, can be used wherever those networks are accepted.
