Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard

★★★★☆4.3 · 0 reviews

Best for: AA flyers who check a bag a few times a year

$99 USD

👍 Pros

  • The complimentary checked bag offsets the fee in short order
  • No surcharge on purchases made abroad
  • Year one comes with the annual fee waived

👎 Cons

  • The annual fee returns starting in the second year
  • Miles only carry value within American and oneworld
  • Lounge entry is not included

This is the checked-bag-fee killer for American Airlines flyers: the free first checked bag pays back the $99 fee after roughly two round trips (a checked bag runs about $35-$40 each way as of 2026). It's a weak everyday card, though, earning just 2x on AA, gas and restaurants and 1x elsewhere, so don't make it your daily driver. Skip it entirely if you rarely check bags or you don't fly American/oneworld, since the miles strand you in one program. The first-year fee waiver makes year one essentially free; reconfirm that and the $125 flight discount on Citi's page.
