Our take on the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi

The Costco Anywhere Visa is the best choice for a Costco member who fills up at Costco gas stations, because as of September 2026 Citi pays 5% on gas at Costco and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging, on up to $7,000 a year combined. It also pays 3% at restaurants and on eligible travel, 2% at Costco and 1% elsewhere, with no annual fee beyond the Costco membership you already pay for.

The biggest trade-off is how you get paid. Rewards arrive once a year as a certificate after your February statement closes, and you redeem it for cash or merchandise at a U.S. Costco warehouse. That means cash back sits unused for up to a year, and if you let your membership lapse, the card stops making sense.

For the right household the value is strong: gas, dining and travel at 3% to 5% cover a big share of many budgets. The 2% at Costco itself is only average, since it matches what a flat-rate card pays everywhere. No foreign transaction fees make it a reasonable card to take on a trip abroad.

Good fit if

  • You're a Costco member who buys gas at Costco most weeks
  • You spend $300 or more a month on restaurants and travel combined
  • You don't mind waiting for a once-a-year reward certificate

Skip it if

  • You want cash back you can use every month
  • You're not a Costco member or might drop the membership
Worked example

Assume $150 a month on gas at Costco, $300 a month at restaurants, $400 a month at Costco and $800 on everything else. Costco gas is $1,800 a year at 5%, or $90, well within the $7,000 cap. Restaurants are $3,600 at 3%, or $108. Costco purchases are $4,800 at 2%, or $96. Other spending is $9,600 at 1%, or $96. Your February certificate would be $390, with no annual fee beyond your Costco membership. The certificate is counted conservatively at its face value as Costco cash.

How it stacks up

The Sam's Club Mastercard is the warehouse-club rival, so compare it if you shop at Sam's Club instead. Costco shoppers who want monthly cash back rather than a yearly certificate could use the Wells Fargo Active Cash, a Visa that pays 2% on everything including Costco purchases, but they would give up 3% to 5% on gas, dining and travel.

The standout here is fuel: strong cash back on gas (up to an annual spending cap) makes it a winner for high-mileage drivers, plus bonus dining and travel and Costco purchases. It has no separate annual fee, but you must keep a paid Costco membership, so factor that cost in. Rewards arrive once a year as a certificate redeemable at Costco, not monthly statement credit, which annoys people who want flexible cash. Past the gas cap the rate drops.
